A bit about Scalyr

Scalyr’s mission is to build the best tool for engineers to understand their operational systems. Our founder, Steve Newman, cofounded Writely (aka Google Docs). Frustrated by the fact that visibility tools – even Google’s in-house tools – weren’t keeping up, Steve started Scalyr to create a better solution. It’s lightning fast, feature-rich and customers love it. The opportunity in front of us is huge and we are still in the very early days. This is going to be one of those companies where people will look back and say “I wish I’d been there when…” well, this is your chance to be part of “when”.

We believe in showcasing transparency in our process. Check out the below blog posts that dive into the greater detail of your interview:

Your opportunity

Do you want to join a company where you will be first on the frontlines to define our platform by building the technical bridges from our massive storage backend to the user-facing frontend at Scalyr? We’re a team that takes software engineering principles seriously. Joining Scalyr is an amazing opportunity for anyone passionate about building a best-in-class user interface that allows dev-ops teams worldwide to quickly solve problems. We are seeking an individual who:

  • Loves to help define the future API consumed by our frontends
  • Has familiarity with building new backend services, and creating major platform features from scratch
  • Do you find yourself never getting enough of topics like grpc, REST, and microservices? If this sounds like your kind of gig, we should talk
  • Wants to act as a thought-leader on our great team
  • Enjoys working on the overall architecture of our highly performant app

Do you find yourself passionate about being at the center of that effort? Do you also care to work on other components of the product? Do you like adding feature additions, bug fixes, and the like? Excellent. Because in addition to writing code, you'll be deeply involved in helping add to design discussions, conferring over technology dialogue, and all other aspects of the engine that powers Scalyr. We're looking for these qualities:

  • You’re smart enough to work at top companies, but you’re picky about finding the right role
  • You have lot of experience, but you also like to learn new things
  • You enjoy working with smart people and have fun building something phenomenal

Your tools:

  • You love to program primarily in modern Java, with occasional Python and Bash
  • You are a fan of using GitHub for git and Pull Requests
  • Building with maven and Jenkins and deploying to AWS is part of a rhythm to you
  • We dogfood like crazy, so you will become a Scalyr expert in production

Your skills:

  • Fluent in Java or another high-level language
  • Practical experience with RPCs in distributed systems
  • Proven programming skill through a relevant 4 year degree or equivalent experience
  • Generalist with a hacker mentality. You have a track record of powering through roadblocks

Bonus points:

  • A natural drive to produce clean, well-tested code
  • You can break a complex distributed system down into components with clean interfaces
  • Familiarity with the basics of AWS or similar cloud environments

Your benefits:

  • Competitive salary & equity at a fast growing startup
  • Fully funded comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401k
  • Free lunch
  • Flexible schedule
  • Unlimited vacations
  • Paid parental leave
  • Optional company hikes a couple days per week
  • Easygoing, low-stress, considerate and fun office environment
  • Whatever equipment you need to get the job done
